Thus Saith the Lord

Collection:
Old Testament

A Sermon on Jeremiah 17:5-8

Thus says the LORD:
“Cursed is the man who trusts in man
and makes flesh his strength,
whose heart turns away from the LORD.
He is like a shrub in the desert,
and shall not see any good come.
He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness,
in an uninhabited salt land.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
whose trust is the LORD.
He is like a tree planted by water,
that sends out its roots by the stream,
and does not fear when heat comes,
for its leaves remain green,
and is not anxious in the year of drought,
for it does not cease to bear fruit.” (ESV)

Why is it that in the modern day, with all our technological achievements, man still faces the same problems as he did three thousand years ago? It is apparent that mankind is sick with a disease, with every generation promising a Utopian future. We are still in a cycle of death, injustice and social ills. In order to treat this disease, we must have a proper diagnosis of what it is. In this sermon on Isaiah 1:5-6, Dr. Martyn Lloyd Jones reveals to us through Scripture that our sickness is much worse than we thought. It is one that affects every capacity of every man, woman, and child. As a good doctor would, Dr. Lloyd-Jones does not leave the listener without hope – nor does the Bible. You will hear of your disease, but you will also hear of the great news that there is a cure, and it will remedy your greatest need.

Additional Scripture Translations

Jeremiah 17:5-8, New American Standard Bible

5This is what the Lord says:

“Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind

And makes flesh his strength,

And whose heart turns away from the Lord.

6For he will be like a bush in the desert,

And will not see when prosperity comes,

But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness,

A land of salt that is not inhabited.

7Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

And whose trust is the Lord.

8For he will be like a tree planted by the water

That extends its roots by a stream,

And does not fear when the heat comes;

But its leaves will be green,

And it will not be anxious in a year of drought,

Nor cease to yield fruit.

Jeremiah 17:5-8, King James Version

5¶ Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD. 6For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good cometh; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. 7Blessed is the man that trusteth in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. 8For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
