The Spirits Help

Book of Romans

A Sermon on Romans 8:26-27

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. (ESV)

Do your prayers ever feel empty? As if the enemy stops your words from being heard by our Savior? Sometimes we find ourselves groaning, not able to put into words what we need from God. We lose our confidence that we even belong to God. In this installment, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones argues that our groanings are actually additional proof of our sonship. One of the very reasons God sends His Holy Spirit to us. He comes alongside us to help us in our weakness, to be our Advocate, telling us what to pray when we come before the Father. He intercedes for us. We utter wordless groanings and God hears, understands, and approves of these prayers. Because it is God who sends the Spirit to us to work these things in us. He only sends his Spirit to true believers. If, therefore, you find yourself giving vent to these groanings, be encouraged. It is proof of your true relation to God, because it is the Spirit that produces these groanings in us. Therefore, rejoice Christian! You belong to Him!
