Scripture
1But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan …
Sermon Description
Modern people reject the truth of the Christian faith often on the basis of the supposed superiority of science over faith. The claim is that no rational person can believe the gospel and the Christian faith in light of what is known about the world. In this sermon from Acts 5:1–11 titled “Christ: The Answer to Our Needs,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones explains that while people may affirm the need for moral improvement, and therefore like the moral teachings of Jesus, they reject the two natures in Christ and the need for salvation from sin and the wrath to come. They reject the supernatural religion of Christianity for the moralistic teachings of godless humanism but moralistic religion cannot save people from their inevitable death. Humanity needs a new nature that will grant a true desire for righteousness. They must be delivered from the wrath of God and the power of Satan. Only through the supernatural work of Christianity can His children be transferred from the kingdom of Satan into the kingdom of God. As Dr. Lloyd-Jones powerfully says, those who reject the gospel of Christ have no hope. Moralistic teachings cannot save anyone from death, Satan, and the wrath of God against all unrighteousness. Salvation is only through the supernatural work of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Sermon Breakdown
- The world rejects the Gospel because it has lost awareness of the unseen, supernatural and eternal. The modern man thinks he understands the world completely through science but he is still just a speck.
- The world rejects the Gospel because it fails to realize the depth of the problem - the problem is in the heart, not the head. The depth of iniquity in the natural, human and unregenerate heart is not known or is dismissed.
- The world rejects the Gospel because it does not realize its real need. It thinks it just needs to be better but it needs a new nature, power over the devil, power over death and ability to satisfy God.
- The world rejects the Gospel because it fails to realize its total inability in the face of its needs. Man cannot change himself, conquer the devil, conquer death or satisfy God.
- The world rejects the Gospel because it does not realize what the Gospel offers. The Gospel offers to meet every need and solve every problem through Jesus Christ.
- The Gospel offers a new nature, victory over the devil, victory over death and reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ. He lived a perfect life, conquered the devil, died and rose again, and gives new life.
Sermon Q&A
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Sermon Questions and Answers
Why does the world reject the Christian gospel according to Lloyd-Jones?
According to Dr. Lloyd-Jones, the world rejects the Christian gospel for several key reasons:
-
People have "lost awareness of the unseen, the supernatural and the eternal." They believe everything is within their understanding and dismiss anything supernatural.
-
People fail to understand the depth of their problem: "The trouble with men is not in his head, it's in his heart. It isn't an intellectual problem. It's a moral problem."
-
People don't realize their real need. They think they just need improvement or reformation rather than radical transformation.
-
People fail to recognize their total inability to solve their fundamental problems.
-
People don't understand what the gospel actually offers them. They reduce it to mere moral teaching rather than understanding its supernatural power.
What are the four main enemies of mankind identified in the sermon?
Dr. Lloyd-Jones identifies four main enemies that confront mankind:
-
Sin - "This indwelling evil, this power greater than our minds that ever works in us."
-
Satan - "A power, an unseen power in the world, moving, manipulating, conspiring. He's an enemy of men. He's the antagonist of men. He's the adversary of men."
-
Death - "Death is described as the last enemy and death is the enemy of men." It's inevitable and cannot be avoided.
-
The Law of God - Though not originally meant to be an enemy, it becomes our enemy because we are sinners. "The law is against us. The law is something that condemns us, and the law has no mercy."
Why does Lloyd-Jones say that man cannot change himself?
Lloyd-Jones gives several reasons why man cannot change himself:
-
Human nature is fundamentally flawed and cannot be self-corrected: "Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? It can't be done. It's simply impossible."
-
Man never truly knows himself: "Man is always doing this. Man's the biggest fool in the universe because he fools himself. Man is centrally and essentially dishonest."
-
Man can see faults in others but is blind to the same faults in himself (illustrated through the story of David and Nathan).
-
Man can improve outward appearances but cannot change the heart: "Yes, you can produce respectability... But that isn't to change a man. That's only to improve him, to put a better suit on him."
What does Lloyd-Jones say about modern views of human perfectibility?
Dr. Lloyd-Jones critiques the modern belief in human perfectibility:
-
"The world still believes in its own perfectibility. The so-called thinkers believe in human perfectability."
-
Modern people believe they are "superior to forefathers" and that perfectibility "is actually happening."
-
They believe knowledge is power and that education eliminates crime, yet crime rates continue to rise despite increased education.
-
Lloyd-Jones calls this view inconsistent and unrealistic: "A man who can believe in the fact that Perfectibility is already taking Place face to face with the facts and the statistics of this Modern Hour, is a man, I say, who is not a realist."
-
The modern view ignores that "there is something in this world, some influence and power, that is defeating mankind and all its best and its most zealous efforts."
What does Lloyd-Jones say the gospel offers that moral teaching alone cannot provide?
According to Lloyd-Jones, the gospel offers solutions to our deepest problems that mere moral teaching cannot:
-
A new nature: "My dear friends, here is one who took on human nature in order that he can give you a new human nature, a new birth, a new beginning, a new start, a new heart."
-
Power over Satan: "He will put his spirit into you to enable you to conquer the devil."
-
Victory over death: "He burst asunder the bonds of death. He arose triumphant of the grave. He hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel."
-
Reconciliation with God: "God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself."
-
Forgiveness of sins: "His own self bear our sins in his own body on the tree."
-
Hope for failures: Unlike moral teaching which has "nothing to give to a man in the gutter," the gospel offers complete salvation "whatever the past may have been, whatever your story."
The Book of Acts
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) was a Welsh evangelical minister who preached and taught in the Reformed tradition. His principal ministry was at Westminster Chapel, in central London, from 1939-1968, where he delivered multi-year expositions on books of the bible such as Romans, Ephesians and the Gospel of John. In addition to the MLJ Trust’s collection of 1,600 of these sermons in audio format, most of these great sermon series are available in book form (including a 14 volume collection of the Romans sermons), as are other series such as "Spiritual Depression", "Studies in the Sermon on the Mount" and "Great Biblical Doctrines". He is considered by many evangelical leaders today to be an authority on biblical truth and the sufficiency of Scripture.
