Sermon #3242

Results of the Resurrection

A Sermon on Romans 10:9-10

Originally preached Nov. 8, 1963

Scripture

Romans 10:9-10 ESV KJV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. (ESV)

Sermon Description

What is at the center of history? In this sermon on Romans 10:9–10 titled “Results of the Resurrection,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones proclaims that it is Jesus Christ, the crucified Messiah. His sacrificial death on the cross of Calvary is the means by which God conquered sin, Satan, and the power of death. All the blessings that Christ gives are procured by His suffering and rising from the grave. He then ascended into heaven, where He lives and intercedes for His people. After ascending into heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit just as He promised, to empower and comfort believers and the church. Jesus will return to bring His Kingdom to completion by finally destroying death and evil once and for all. These glorious truths should lead all believers to trust and hope in God that He is faithful to bring the work of redemption to completion. Christians ought to live in light of this hope and never look to themselves for wisdom and strength, but rely wholly on Him who has conquered the grave and defeated death.

Sermon Q&A

What is the Content of Saving Faith According to Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones?

According to Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones' sermon on Romans 10:9-10, saving faith has specific content that believers must understand and embrace. Here are the key elements:

What are the two main components of saving faith according to Romans 10:9-10?

Dr. Lloyd-Jones identifies two key components from the verse "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved":

  1. Confessing Jesus as Lord - acknowledging His lordship and all that it entails
  2. Believing that God raised Jesus from the dead - embracing the resurrection and all its implications

Why is believing in the literal resurrection essential for salvation?

Dr. Lloyd-Jones emphasizes that belief in the literal, physical resurrection is absolutely vital because:

  • The apostles made it central to their preaching ("they preached Jesus and the resurrection")
  • It was the foundation of apostolic ministry
  • They meant "the literal physical rising in the body out of the grave"
  • Modern claims that one can be a Christian without believing in the physical resurrection contradict apostolic teaching

What does Christ's resurrection prove about His identity?

The resurrection proves that:

  • Jesus is the Son of God
  • He is the Lord of glory
  • His claims about Himself were true
  • He has conquered all enemies, including death which is "our last enemy"

How does the resurrection relate to the Holy Spirit's coming?

Lloyd-Jones explains that the resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit are intimately connected:

  • The Holy Spirit could not be given until after Christ's resurrection and glorification
  • John 7:37-39 explicitly states that "the Holy Ghost was not yet given because that Jesus was not yet glorified"
  • Jesus said, "It is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you" (John 16:7)
  • The resurrection made Pentecost possible

What is Christ's present position according to the sermon?

Dr. Lloyd-Jones emphasizes that Christ's current position is:

  • Seated at the right hand of God (Hebrews 1:3)
  • Exalted above all powers (Philippians 2:9-11)
  • Given all power in heaven and earth (Matthew 28:18)
  • Reigning until His enemies are made His footstool
  • Acting as our High Priest and intercessor

How does Christ's resurrection affect believers in the present?

The resurrection affects believers now by:

  • Giving them new life in Christ (Romans 6)
  • Making Christ the head of the church, which is His body
  • Providing a living intercessor who "ever liveth to make intercession for us"
  • Giving believers access to a sympathetic High Priest who understands our weaknesses
  • Providing help in times of temptation

What future hope does the resurrection guarantee for believers?

The resurrection guarantees:

  • The believer's own resurrection (1 Corinthians 15)
  • The glorification of believers' bodies (Philippians 3:21)
  • Complete deliverance from sin in every form
  • That believers "shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is" (1 John 3:2)
  • Christ's second coming and the judgment of the world

Dr. Lloyd-Jones concludes that saving faith isn't merely intellectual assent to facts but embracing the full implications of Christ's resurrection, which transforms how believers live now and gives them certain hope for the future.

The Book of Romans

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) was a Welsh evangelical minister who preached and taught in the Reformed tradition. His principal ministry was at Westminster Chapel, in central London, from 1939-1968, where he delivered multi-year expositions on books of the bible such as Romans, Ephesians and the Gospel of John. In addition to the MLJ Trust’s collection of 1,600 of these sermons in audio format, most of these great sermon series are available in book form (including a 14 volume collection of the Romans sermons), as are other series such as "Spiritual Depression", "Studies in the Sermon on the Mount" and "Great Biblical Doctrines". He is considered by many evangelical leaders today to be an authority on biblical truth and the sufficiency of Scripture.
