Sermon Description
Christians have all experienced that moment where the gospel all of a sudden makes sense. They did not know and could not understand the gospel but then they could. This is why the gospel is so mysterious. In this sermon on Ephesians 6:18–20 titled “The Mystery of the Gospel (1),” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones unpacks the mystery of the gospel, and why a person in their natural state cannot comprehend it. Dr. Lloyd-Jones begins by asking the questions, “What is the mystery of the gospel?” and “Why is the gospel a mystery?” After delving through the Scriptures, he comes to the conclusion that the mystery of the gospel is the mind of God. No one understands the mystery of the gospel on their own because it is the very wisdom and mind of God. One might consider themselves wise, but no one is wise enough to understand the mind of the eternal God. At this point, Dr. Lloyd-Jones gives hope by providing the only way that anyone might understand the gospel. They must repent and turn away from the foolish thinking that they can understand the mind of God, and consider themselves rightly as a fool. Once they repent and asks God to forgive them, then the Spirit will reveal the mystery of this gospel and they will rejoice in it. Be encouraged by this clear explanation of the glorious mystery of the gospel.
Sermon Breakdown
- The apostle Paul solicits prayers from the Ephesians church to pray for him as he preaches the gospel.
- Paul describes the gospel message as the "mystery of the gospel."
- The term "mystery" does not mean the gospel is vague or indefinite. It means the gospel was once hidden but has now been revealed by God.
- Paul's role as an apostle is to make known this mystery of the gospel that was previously hidden.
- There are two main ways people try to deny the "mystery" aspect of the gospel: demythologizing the gospel and claiming a new Bible translation is needed to understand the gospel.
- The gospel is shown to be a "mystery" in the New Testament through Jesus' parables, the gospel's independence from human understanding, and people's surprise at Jesus' teachings.
- The gospel is a mystery because it is the wisdom of God, not human wisdom. Human minds cannot fully understand the mind and wisdom of God.
- Due to sin, human minds are fallen and darkened. They cannot properly understand spiritual truths on their own.
- The only way to understand the mystery of the gospel is through repentance and humbling oneself to receive revelation from the Holy Spirit.
- One must come to God with a childlike faith, not reliance on human cleverness or wisdom. The gospel is made understandable through the power of the Holy Spirit, not human intellect.
Sermon Q&A
Understanding the Mystery of the Gospel According to Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
What does Dr. Lloyd-Jones mean by "the mystery of the gospel"?
Dr. Lloyd-Jones clarifies that "mystery" in the New Testament doesn't mean something vague or nebulous. Rather, it refers to something that "while in and of itself inscrutable and unattainable by the human intellect, has nevertheless been made plain and clear by the goodness and the grace and the mercy of God." The mystery has been revealed and explained, and the preacher's job is to make it known. It's not mysterious because it's intentionally obscure, but because it originates in the mind of God and transcends human understanding without divine revelation.
Why do people struggle to accept the gospel according to Dr. Lloyd-Jones?
According to Lloyd-Jones, people struggle because they fail to recognize the element of mystery that is essential to the gospel. They approach it with the assumption that if it could be made simpler, more modern, or more accessible, people would naturally accept it. However, the fundamental issue is that "the natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God, for they are foolishness unto him. Neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." The gospel is inherently beyond human wisdom and requires spiritual illumination.
What are the ways people try to remove the mystery from the gospel?
Dr. Lloyd-Jones identifies two main approaches:
-
"Demythologizing" the gospel - removing miracles and supernatural elements to leave just the ethical teachings. He references the German theologian Bultmann who argued that modern scientific people would accept the gospel if it were stripped of its miraculous elements.
-
Believing that new translations alone will make the gospel accessible - the idea that if the gospel were just put in simpler language, everyone would believe it. Lloyd-Jones argues this misunderstands the fundamental issue, which isn't linguistic but spiritual.
How does Jesus demonstrate the mysterious nature of the gospel in His ministry?
Dr. Lloyd-Jones points out that Jesus consistently surprised people and baffled human understanding. Examples include: - Mary's surprise at the angelic announcement - His brothers not understanding His ministry - Even John the Baptist questioning if He was truly the Messiah - His teaching in parables, which Jesus explicitly said was to reveal mysteries to some while concealing them from others - The way He constantly amazed both critics and followers
Why is the gospel a mystery according to Dr. Lloyd-Jones?
Lloyd-Jones provides two main reasons: 1. "Because it is the wisdom of God" - By definition, God's wisdom transcends human understanding. The gospel originates in the mind of the eternal God. 2. Because of our fallen condition - "When men fell, even his mind fell, and our minds are fallen." Our understanding is darkened by sin, which is why even brilliant scholars can reject the gospel while simple people embrace it.
How can someone understand the mystery of the gospel?
The only way to understand the mystery is through repentance and spiritual revelation. Dr. Lloyd-Jones explains this means: 1. Acknowledging our intellectual limitations before God 2. Becoming "as a little child" who receives rather than analyzes 3. Asking God to reveal the truth through His Spirit 4. Humbling ourselves and admitting we know nothing apart from divine revelation
As Lloyd-Jones says: "Instead of going with your cleverness to the Bible, you get on your knees and you say, 'God, I'm ignorant...Give me understanding. Give me knowledge of the revelation.'"
Why does Dr. Lloyd-Jones find this aspect of the gospel so glorious?
He rejoices that the gospel being a mystery means it's accessible to everyone regardless of intellectual capacity. "I've got a gospel, you know, for anybody, everybody." It doesn't depend on human wisdom or education but on "the power of God in the Holy Spirit to make things plain and clear." This makes the gospel universally accessible to anyone who approaches with humility and childlike faith.

Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones (1899-1981) was a Welsh evangelical minister who preached and taught in the Reformed tradition. His principal ministry was at Westminster Chapel, in central London, from 1939-1968, where he delivered multi-year expositions on books of the bible such as Romans, Ephesians and the Gospel of John. In addition to the MLJ Trust’s collection of 1,600 of these sermons in audio format, most of these great sermon series are available in book form (including a 14 volume collection of the Romans sermons), as are other series such as "Spiritual Depression", "Studies in the Sermon on the Mount" and "Great Biblical Doctrines". He is considered by many evangelical leaders today to be an authority on biblical truth and the sufficiency of Scripture.
