A Sermon on Ephesians 6:10-13

The Whole Armor of God

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. (ESV)

What is one of the greatest dangers to the Church? In this sermon on Ephesians 6:10-13, Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones warns us about all of the devil’s attack upon the Church by introducing false teaching about the person of Christ. The early Church, in the time of the apostles, had to battle those who denied that Jesus truly came in the flesh. In later times, the Church had to oppose those that said Jesus is just a creature sent by God, not the Creator God Himself. Heresy is so dangerous because it is not merely an academic question of theology, but it affects the Gospel proclamation of the Church. When the Church has lost sight of who Jesus is and what he has done, it loses itself and becomes fatally compromised. You may ask, what does this mean for me? This answer is simple; it matters because it is Jesus Christ who saves us from our sins and redeems us by His death! It is Jesus who saves us through the Holy Spirit’s gift of faith! The importance of Jesus Christ is the reason that the Church must always be clear and bold in its proclamation of God’s truth as found in His Word!

Ephesians 6:10-13, New American Standard Bible

The Armor of God

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Ephesians 6:10-13, King James Version

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
