A Sermon on Ephesians 6:10-13

The Whole Armor of God

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. (ESV)

What is one of the greatest hindrances to the Church today? Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones makes the bold claim that it is the Church’s quenching of the Holy Spirit that hinders it more than anything. Many Christians, in a desire to avoid making Christianity reliant on subjective religious experiences, have left no room for the work and the ministry of the Holy Spirit in their lives. They have quenched the Holy Spirit! The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit is a person who indwell all who believe. The Church of today ought to look at the early Church as found in Acts to see what it looks like to look to the Holy Spirit for power and guidance. What are the practical applications of this message on Ephesians 6:10-13? Christians should seek to look to the Holy Spirit to empower their ministries and lives as they follow Jesus Christ. The Church as a whole should look to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as He allows Christians to understand the Gospel and God’s Word. We must not overreact against those who abuse the Bible’s teaching on the Holy Spirit by suppressing what the Bible teaches about the Holy Spirt and his ministry in the Church!

The Armor of God

10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Ephesians 6:10-13, King James Version

10Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
